Ahanta West Launches Investigation into Boukrom Chief Over Illegal Mining Allegations: A Deep Dive into the Region's Environmental and Economic Challenges
The Ahanta West Municipal Security Council, in collaboration with the Western Regional Security Council, has launched a comprehensive investigation into illegal mining activities in Boukrom, a community within the Ahanta West Municipality. The inquiry centers on allegations that the traditional leader, Nana Brekunta, is complicit in these activities, which have devastated local farmland and posed significant threats to the environment and nearby residents.
The operation, led by Municipal Chief Executive Ebenezer Kofi Aidoo, will scrutinize the activities of the Chief of Boukrom alongside ongoing illegal mining. Despite the chief's strong denial, stating his presence in the community and refusal to hide from authorities, the investigation proceeds with the recovery of excavators, water pump machines, and the control board of a second excavator, along with the apprehension of two suspects identified as bodyguards of the chief.
Aidoo emphasized the importance of the investigation in combating the illegal mining threat, citing the community's concerns about intimidation by illegal miners with pump action guns and macho men. He announced that individuals arrested for illegal mining will be required to rehabilitate damaged land before facing legal action, with a pledge to make Ahanta West a no-go area for illegal mining.
Brigadier General Musah Whajah, the Western Regional National Security Liaison Officer, highlighted the sustained effort against illegal mining, emphasizing the need for authorities to gather complaints from other villages and maintain focus on protecting water bodies and forest reserves. However, the chief, Nana Breku Nda IX, dismissed the allegations, describing them as false and denying any personal interactions with the MCE.
The MCE, in a social media post, acknowledged the significant results of the joint operation with the Regional National Security Team in Boukrom, following months of surveillance. He assured residents of the commitment to protecting the environment and resources, amidst troubling reports of a resurgence in illegal mining throughout several communities in the Western Region.
This investigation reflects broader national efforts to combat illegal mining activities that have devastated water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves across multiple regions.
