Bold headline: Free changes for travelers as airspace tensions reshape Middle East travel.
Air Canada has canceled all flights to Dubai and to Tel Aviv, while both Air Canada and WestJet are offering customers flexible, free-change options during the Middle East airspace restrictions and ongoing tensions.
Prices for oil spiked on Monday, March 2, after U.S. and Israeli actions against Iran, followed by retaliatory strikes. Several Middle Eastern nations have closed their airspace, squeezing flights into a narrower corridor and causing widespread delays and cancellations.
By Tuesday, March 3, the direct impacts on Vancouver International Airport (YVR) were modest, with only three flight cancellations in the last 24 hours per real-time flight data from FlightAware. Nearby hubs show more pronounced effects: Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) reported 19 cancellations in the same period, reflecting its role as a major international gateway.
Air Canada
On Monday, Air Canada suspended all flights to Israel and Dubai through March 22. An Air Canada spokesperson explained to Vancouver Is Awesome that airspace restrictions amid the Middle East military situation are affecting travel in the region, with services to Tel Aviv and Dubai paused until March 22. The airline expects to resume service on March 23, though the situation remains dynamic and will be continually monitored. Air Canada emphasizes that customer safety, crew welfare, and aircraft protection remain its top priorities.
From Toronto, Air Canada operates four direct weekly flights to Israel and daily flights to Dubai.
