An 'Inside Out' Solar System?

Imagine a star with planets, but in a completely unexpected order. That's exactly what researchers have stumbled upon with LHS 1903, a star located in the Milky Way's thick disc.

In our familiar Solar System, the planets are neatly arranged with small, rocky worlds closest to the Sun, followed by gas giants. Scientists believed this pattern was universal. But LHS 1903 challenges this notion.

Initially, astronomers identified three planets orbiting this red dwarf star, which is cooler and less bright than our Sun. The first planet was rocky, as expected, followed by two gas giants. However, a closer look with the Cheops space telescope revealed a fourth planet, and it's also rocky!

The Inside-Out Enigma

Lead author Thomas Wilson, a planetary astrophysicist at the University of Warwick, explains, "This is an inside-out system, with a planet order of rocky-gaseous-gaseous-and then rocky again."

Wilson adds, "Rocky planets typically don't form so far from their star. This fourth planet is a real puzzle."

A New Formation Theory?

The traditional view is that planets form simultaneously in a protoplanetary disc, with dust grains clumping together to create cores that eventually become planets. But the team suggests a different scenario for LHS 1903.

"Perhaps these planets formed one at a time," Wilson proposes. "By the time the fourth planet came along, the system might have run out of gas, yet here it is, a small, rocky world, defying expectations."

Revisiting Planet Formation Theories

Since the 1990s, astronomers have discovered over 6,000 exoplanets, mostly by detecting changes in stellar brightness as planets pass in front of their stars. These discoveries have led to a re-evaluation of planet formation theories.

"Our theories are often based on our Solar System," says Isabel Rebollido, a planetary disc researcher at the European Space Agency. "But with each new exoplanet system, we're learning that the universe is full of surprises."
