In a surprising move, the company plans to mark employees as 'idle' if their laptops show no activity for a mere 5 minutes! The company is set to implement a tool named ProHance to monitor mouse and keyboard usage, tracking every click and keystroke. This gradual rollout aims to measure productivity, but it raises questions about employee privacy and trust. The system will log inactivity, marking employees idle after 5 minutes of no keyboard or mouse usage. Additionally, if a laptop remains idle for 15 minutes, the employee will be considered engaged in activities away from their system.
But here's the twist: Cognizant assures that this data won't be used for performance evaluation. Instead, they claim it's to identify inefficiencies. A spokesperson stated, 'We use productivity tools to understand client processes and improve design.' However, this assurance may not ease the minds of employees who feel their every move is being watched.
Interestingly, Cognizant isn't alone in using ProHance. Other companies, such as Wipro, also employ this tool. Cognizant asserts that tracking will only occur with employee consent, but some executives reveal that ProHance training was mandatory. This training covers various metrics, from productive hours to time spent on tasks and specific applications. One employee shared, 'We had to agree to the terms to complete the course.'
The primary goal, according to the report, is to ensure employees work a set number of hours, even during breaks. Cognizant and its clients seek increased productivity, and micro-tracking is their chosen method. But is it a step too far?
