Grand Seiko has unveiled two stunning new watches that beautifully encapsulate the essence of winter in Shinshu, showcasing the iconic Snowflake and Skyflake dials. These exquisite timepieces, each crafted within a compact 33.0mm by 9.1mm case, are powered by the innovative Caliber 9F51 quartz movement.
The Snowflake dial, first introduced back in 2005, is a tribute to the snow-laden peaks of the Hotaka mountain range located in Nagano Prefecture. This region is not only home to the Grand Seiko Spring Drive and quartz manufacturing but also stands as a representation of the brand's "Nature of Time" philosophy. The design captures the serene and tranquil beauty of the snowy landscape, making it a hallmark in the world of luxury watches.
Interestingly, the Snowflake design inspired a variant called the Skyflake, characterized by its soft blue hue. This light blue color mirrors the sight of snow dancing in the breeze under a pristine sky, adding a unique touch to the collection.
Thanks to the advancements in technology, the compact size of these new models has been made achievable by the new Caliber 9F51, which marks the first innovation in the 9F family in six years. This movement is notably 0.6mm smaller than its predecessor, the well-established Caliber 9F61, which does not feature a date function.
The textures of the dials draw direct inspiration from the breathtaking winter vistas observable from the Shinshu Watch Studio located in Shiojiri. Here, the relentless winds shape the alpine snow into fascinating patterns, which have been artfully replicated on the dials. To achieve the rugged texture and striking whiteness reminiscent of the Hotaka slopes, the dials undergo a meticulous creation process. Rather than simply applying white paint, a combination of silver-plating, clear coating, and detailed finishing is used, resulting in exceptional light reflection and brilliance. A vivid blue tempered steel seconds hand adds an eye-catching contrast to the overall design.
Since its inception in 1993, the Caliber 9F movement has been regarded as the pinnacle of quartz technology. The latest iteration maintains an impressive accuracy of ±10 seconds per year. It includes features such as a regulation switch for precise adjustments, a Backlash Auto-Adjust Mechanism to eliminate any shuddering of the seconds hand, and a Twin Pulse Control Motor. Each movement is meticulously assembled by hand using aged quartz crystals and a thermo-compensated integrated circuit to ensure consistent rate stability.
Both of these remarkable creations will be available as continuous-production models starting April 2026 at Grand Seiko boutiques and select retail partners across the globe. They come with stainless steel cases and bracelets, dual-curve sapphire crystals, a water resistance rating of 10 bar, and impressive magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m.
