EU Nuclear Deterrence Talk: Merz, Macron, and the US-Germany Reboot (2026)

A bold vision for Europe's future is taking shape, and it's time to pay attention. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has sparked a controversial discussion with his call for a European nuclear shield, a move that could reshape the continent's relationship with the United States.

In a powerful speech at the Munich Security Conference, Merz emphasized the need for Europe to strengthen its position and rebuild trust with Washington. He warned that the old global order is crumbling, and the US cannot act alone in this new era of great power politics.

"The world is changing rapidly, and Europe must adapt," Merz stated. "We cannot rely solely on the United States for our defense, especially with the current tensions and uncertainties."

And here's where it gets intriguing: Merz revealed confidential talks with France about a European nuclear deterrent. France, being the EU's sole nuclear power, is set to make a speech on this very topic later this month.

"We Germans are committed to our legal obligations within NATO's nuclear sharing agreement," Merz clarified. "We will not allow Europe to be divided into different security zones."

But why the push for a European nuclear shield? Merz believes it's crucial for Europe to assert its independence and maintain its alliance with the US. With Russia's war in Ukraine and global trade disruptions, Europe faces numerous threats.

"The international rules-based order is under threat," Merz emphasized. "We must acknowledge that this order, as imperfect as it was, no longer exists in its original form."

In a powerful statement, Merz switched to English, emphasizing the importance of unity: "In this era of great power rivalry, not even the United States can go it alone. NATO is a competitive advantage for both Europe and the US. Let's repair and revive our transatlantic trust."

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also acknowledged the critical state of transatlantic ties, but his tone was notably warmer than that of Vice President JD Vance's remarks in 2025.

"The world is changing rapidly, and we must discuss our shared future," Rubio said. "Europe and the US are deeply interconnected, and our fates are intertwined."

The Munich Security Conference, once a forum for Western defense debate during the Cold War, now finds itself at a crossroads. The unquestioned assumption of cooperation has been challenged, and a YouGov poll of Europe's six largest countries reveals a significant drop in favorability towards the US.

And this is the part most people miss: US President Donald Trump's actions have contributed to this shift. From toppling Venezuela's leader to threatening military action against Latin American countries, imposing tariffs, and even discussing the annexation of Greenland from NATO member Denmark, Trump's policies have strained relations.

Merz directly addressed Vice President Vance's accusations from last year, rejecting claims of European censorship and immigration control failures.

"A rift has indeed opened between Europe and the US," Merz acknowledged. "But we must remember that our values and principles are different. Free speech ends where human dignity and the constitution are threatened. We believe in free trade, not tariffs and protectionism."

The debate over Europe's nuclear shield is just beginning, and it promises to be a heated discussion. What do you think? Should Europe pursue its own nuclear deterrent, or is this a step too far? Share your thoughts in the comments; we'd love to hear your perspective on this critical issue.
