India's AFC Asian Cup 2027 dreams took a hit as they suffered a heartbreaking defeat against Bangladesh. This match, held at the Dhaka National Stadium, ended with a score of 0-1, courtesy of a goal by Shekh Morsalin. This loss leaves India with a lot to rethink.
Bangladesh, on the other hand, celebrated their first victory in the qualification campaign. Conversely, India remains winless after five games, putting them in a challenging position.
The game started with both teams testing each other. But it was Bangladesh that struck first. After clearing an Indian long throw, they launched a swift counter-attack. Rakib Hossain raced down the left wing and delivered a low pass into the box. Morsalin, unmarked, skillfully slipped the ball past Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.
India was momentarily stunned but quickly regrouped. They started building their attacks, with Suresh Singh Wangjam and Nikhil Prabhu trying their luck from outside the box. India's best chance came just after the half-hour mark. Striker Rahim Ali managed to steal the ball from Bangladesh's goalkeeper, Mitul Marma. Ali then passed it to Macarton Louis Nickson, who set up Lallianzuala Chhangte for a shot at an open goal. However, Hamza Choudhury, a Bangladesh midfielder, intervened at the last moment, heading the ball away from the goal.
In the second half, India showed more determination. New players, Mohammed Sanan and Lalremtluanga Fanai, were brought in, adding fresh energy to the team. Sanan made an immediate impact, creating a scoring opportunity in the 66th minute. He skillfully evaded his marker, cut inside, and took a shot that troubled the opposition goalkeeper. A minute later, a cross from the left found Brison Fernandes, who unfortunately headed the ball wide. Sanan had another chance with about 15 minutes remaining, but his volley was saved by Marma.
The defeat leaves India at the bottom of the group with just two points from five matches, while Bangladesh is now third with five points.
India's next and final qualifying match is against Hong Kong, scheduled to be played at home on March 31 next year.
