Kenilworth Man's 12 Dips of Christmas: Cold-Water Swims for Sister's Breast Cancer Battle (2026)

A brave man's icy challenge: A heartwarming story of family, courage, and the power of community.

A brother's love knows no bounds, even when it comes to freezing cold water!

Will Johnston, a photographer from Kenilworth, has embarked on a chilling adventure to support his sister, Laura Matthews, in her battle against breast cancer. But here's where it gets controversial... he's doing it by taking a series of cold-water dips in the wild swimming lake at Lavender Hall, braving temperatures as low as 4.9°C.

"I was at a loss, feeling worried and helpless. Then I heard about this campaign and thought, why not? It's crazy, but it's also a way to show my love and support," Will explained.

And this is the part most people miss: Will's not just doing this for his sister. He's also raising funds and awareness for Cancer Research UK, an organization at the forefront of cancer research and treatment.

"The word 'cancer' is terrifying. We're all in shock, but we're doing everything we can to support Los (Laura). She's an incredible woman, and we have an amazing support system around her," Will said.

Within days of starting his campaign, Will had already raised over £1,000, and he's now halfway to his £2,000 goal. But it's not just about the money; it's about the impact and the message.

"The first dip was a shock to the system. I wondered why I was doing this, but then something amazing happens. Your body adjusts, and you feel alive. It's an incredible feeling, and I'm grateful for the support I've received," Will shared.

Paula Young from Cancer Research UK added, "We're incredibly grateful to Will for his dedication and enthusiasm. His efforts will help us continue our life-saving research and make a real difference."

So, what do you think? Is this an inspiring story of courage and community spirit? Or is it a controversial way to raise awareness? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
