Red Sox New Secret Weapon? Tyler Samaniego's 98 MPH Heat & 'Weird Angle' | 2026 Spring Training (2026)

The Red Sox's New Left-Handed Ace: Tyler Samaniego's Journey to the Major Leagues

BOSTON — Tyler Samaniego, a 26-year-old left-handed reliever, is making waves in the Red Sox organization. Despite never pitching above the Double-A level, he's determined to secure a spot on the 2026 Opening Day roster. With a fastball reaching up to 98 mph and a unique throwing angle, Samaniego is turning heads and leaving a lasting impression.

Acquired from the Pirates on December 4, Samaniego's talent was recognized by the Red Sox. He joins a team that's in dire need of left-handed relief help, with only Aroldis Chapman on the 40-man roster. The competition is fierce, but Samaniego is ready to take on the challenge.

"I go into spring training prepared and ready to take a job," Samaniego stated confidently. His journey to the Red Sox began with a back injury and an elbow procedure that sidelined him for the final two and a half months of the 2024 season. However, he bounced back strongly in 2025, posting an impressive 3.08 ERA and 0.91 WHIP in 20 outings for Double-A Altoona.

Samaniego's success is attributed to his unique throwing angle, which adds an extra layer of difficulty for left-handed hitters. With an above-average extension and a low three-quarter slot, his fastball is both effective and deceptive. This angle, combined with his two-seamer and four-seamer, makes him a formidable left-handed reliever.

His Baseball America scouting report highlights his diverse arsenal, including two mid-90s fastballs, a two-plane mid-80s slider, and a mid-to-upper-80s changeup. Samaniego's ability to mix up his pitches and adapt to different hitters is a key strength. He held lefties to a .151 batting average and averaged 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings, showcasing his versatility.

Despite his impressive skills, Samaniego's journey to the major leagues has been challenging. He's had to overcome injuries and prove his worth, but his determination and talent have not gone unnoticed. With the Red Sox in need of left-handed relief, Samaniego is a strong contender to make the Opening Day roster and contribute to the team's success.
