Springboks' Success: Bryan Habana on Rassie Erasmus' Impact and the Key to Dominance (2026)

Bryan Habana identifies a unique, never-before-seen element that has underpinned the Springboks’ ascent under Rassie Erasmus’ leadership, even as some label his governance as autocratic.

Habana argues that the team’s sustained continuity since Erasmus took the helm has been the decisive factor behind their recent success.

Historically, South Africa had two Rugby World Cup titles before 2018 (1995 and 2007), but they did not enjoy a prolonged period of dominance at rugby’s pinnacle. Over the past seven years, Erasmus has changed that narrative, guiding the team to consecutive World Cup triumphs and a 2025 campaign that cements the Boks as the world’s top side with the next global tournament still two years away.

Transforming the Springboks

Habana credits Erasmus for orchestrating a dramatic shift after challenging seasons under former coach Allister Coetzee. He noted on the Business of Sport podcast that Erasmus has been involved with SA Rugby structures in some capacity since around 2007, and immediately established clear boundaries and alignment.

He described Erasmus’ coaching style as decisively assertive and disciplined, emphasizing accountability rather than simply dispensing instructions. According to Habana, this approach fosters continuity without spoon‑feeding players, and marks the first time a single figure has overseen the entire program across three World Cup cycles.

In addition to strong leadership, Erasmus has access to a broad talent pool and a veteran core that has weathered adversity, building mental resilience. Habana highlighted figures like Eben Etzebeth—captain during SA’s 57–0 loss to New Zealand in Palmerston North—and noted the continued leadership of Siya Kolisi, Handre Pollard, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Damian de Allende, and Jesse Kriel, all of whom have accumulated substantial Test experience. At the same time, Erasmus has introduced new players, such as Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, integrating them into an aligned system from top to junior levels.

Habana also praises the governing body’s role in supporting this alignment. He credited SA Rugby’s corporate backing for providing necessary sponsorship and resources, enabling Erasmus to push his strategic vision. In his view, Erasmus’s ability to articulate a bold plan—calling for more sponsors and funds, alongside other needs—has found traction due to this alignment across the sport’s leadership and broader ecosystem.
